US President Donald Trump has said a second round of peace talks with Iran could be possible within Friday.

Pakistani officials have informed that talks could begin within the next "36 to 72 hours". Trump responded via text message, "It's possible!"

A ceasefire with Iran was set to expire on Wednesday evening. Trump had earlier indicated it was "highly unlikely" that he would extend the two-week ceasefire if a deal was not reached before it expired.

However, in a reversal, Trump announced that the US would extend the ceasefire, linking the move to renewed diplomatic efforts. He said the ceasefire would be extended until Iranian negotiators present a "unified proposal" and discussions are concluded.

While the ceasefire has been extended, Trump also stated that the US naval blockade of the Strait of Hormuz would continue and the military would "remain ready and able."

The potential talks would follow an initial round of high-level engagement in Islamabad earlier in April, which ended without a breakthrough. A US delegation led by Vice President JD Vance was expected to travel to Islamabad for a second round of talks, though the trip was delayed.

However, Iran has rejected taking part in a second round of peace talks, citing "Washington's excessive demands, unrealistic expectations, constant shifts in stance, repeated contradictions, and the ongoing naval blockade." State television said no Iranian delegation had travelled to Islamabad.

Several key issues remain unresolved, including whether Iran will be permitted to enrich uranium in the future, what will happen to its stockpile of high-enriched uranium, and which sanctions will be lifted.

Whether a final agreement will be reached ultimately depends on how much both sides are willing to compromise.
