Senegal put Belgium under pressure with first-half lead
Senegal have produced a major surprise in their World Cup Round of 32 clash against Belgium at the Seattle Stadium, taking a 1-0 lead at half-time. The match, which kicked off at 2:00 am Bangladesh time, has seen the African side dominate and leave the favourites on the back foot.
Habib Diarra scored the only goal of the match so far in the 25th minute. Earlier, Senegal had already threatened, with Ismaila Sarr hitting the post in the 13th minute after a mistake from Belgian goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois.
Senegal have dominated every department of the game, holding 64 per cent possession compared to Belgium's 36. They have taken five shots (two on target) to Belgium's two (one on target). Senegal also lead in corners (1-0) and free-kicks (4-0).
Belgium have committed three fouls, while Senegal have yet to foul.
Both sides had mixed group-stage campaigns. Belgium topped Group G with five points, while Senegal qualified as one of the best third-placed teams with just three points.
This is the first-ever meeting between the two nations. A win would give Senegal their first-ever knockout-stage victory in a World Cup. Belgium will need to stage a comeback in the second half to avoid elimination.
