Senior Citizens Day is being observed today (August 21), highlighting the need to respect older people, recognise their lifelong contributions and ensure their rights, dignity, safety and well-being.

While August 21 is recognised as National Senior Citizens Day in the United States, the UN's official International Day of Older Persons is observed on October 1. The August 21 observance was formally proclaimed by US President Ronald Reagan in 1988 following a congressional resolution.

As people grow older, declining physical ability can often be accompanied by loneliness, family neglect and financial difficulties. Many older people also face inadequate healthcare, weak social protection and the risk of physical, emotional or financial abuse.

Ensuring a healthy and dignified life for older people therefore requires more than healthcare alone. Regular contact with family members, opportunities for social participation, financial security, safe housing and respect for their independence are equally important.

Simple gestures can also make a difference. Spending time with older family members, listening to their stories, checking on their health, taking them to places they cherish or helping them spend time with grandchildren can ease loneliness and reinforce their sense of belonging.

The need for such support is becoming more urgent as populations age worldwide. The UN describes population ageing as one of the major social transformations of the 21st century, with the number of older people rising rapidly, particularly in developing countries.

The growing older population also means governments and communities must adapt healthcare, social protection, housing and other public services to meet their needs. At the same time, older people should be able to participate in social life, make decisions about their own lives and live independently with dignity.

Ultimately, the observance is a reminder that ageing should never mean losing one's value or place in society. The knowledge, experience and wisdom accumulated over a lifetime remain valuable assets for families, communities and future generations.
