Seven dead, including gunman, 15 injured in Thailand school shooting

A student's shooting rampage at Debsirin Nonthaburi School, north of Bangkok, has left seven people dead, including the attacker, and at least 15 injured, Thai police said, revising an earlier, lower casualty count.

The attack took place at the school in Bang Kruai district on Friday morning (August 7), reports The Guardian.

Nonthaburi provincial police commander Lieutenant Colonel Decharapi Kongdi confirmed the suspected gunman, a student at the school, died by suicide after opening fire.

Police initially reported one teacher killed and four others injured, but later updated the toll to seven dead, including the attacker, and 15 injured.

According to eye-witnesses, students took shelter in classrooms as gunfire rang out, before police arrived and safely evacuated them. Ambulances and rescue teams rushed to the scene and transported the injured to hospital.

Photos taken from the scene roughly an hour after the attack showed people outside the school comforting one another, while police and emergency workers moved through the school building.

The building appeared to have been secured, though officials had not yet publicly confirmed further details about the attacker's location or the situation at the time.

One witness told reporters that students had hidden inside a classroom and heard gunshots coming from another building. Police officers later knocked on the classroom door and cleared a path for the students to exit safely.

According to district administration data, the school had around 3,100 students and 147 teachers enrolled for the 2025 academic year. Debsirin Nonthaburi is a prestigious institution within the Debsirin school network, founded by the Thai royal family, whose alumni include a former prime minister as well as prominent academics and writers.

Police are continuing to investigate the motive behind the attack.
