Today marks the first death anniversary of Shafin Ahmed, one of Bangladesh’s most celebrated musicians and the lead vocalist and bassist of the iconic band Miles. Shafin passed away on July 24, 2024, at the age of 63 while receiving treatment in Virginia, USA.

Shafin was scheduled to perform at a stage show in Virginia on July 20, 2024, but collapsed suddenly in his hotel room prior to the event. He was rushed to the hospital after losing consciousness, where initial treatment temporarily improved his condition. However, in the early hours of July 21, he suffered a fatal second heart attack. Despite CPR and being placed on life support, he could not be revived.

Born on February 14, 1961, into a renowned musical family, Shafin was the son of legendary singer Feroza Begum and composer Kamal Dasgupta. Immersed in music from a young age, he received classical training from his father and learned Nazrul Sangeet from his mother.

During his studies in the United Kingdom, Shafin was exposed to Western music, which inspired him to start band music. Returning to Bangladesh, he co-founded Miles with his elder brother Hamin Ahmed. The band quickly rose to prominence, becoming one of the country’s most influential musical groups. Approximately 90% of Miles’s songs featured Shafin’s vocals, and he also played bass guitar.

In addition to his work with Miles, Shafin enjoyed a successful solo career, with popular tracks such as “Chand Tara Surjo”, “Jala Jala”, “Firiye Dao Harano Prem”, “Phire Ele Na”, and “Hello Dhaka”. His solo hit “Aaj Janmodin Tomar” remains highly regarded.

Later in life, Shafin entered politics, joining the National Democratic Movement (NDM) in 2017 and the Jatiya Party in 2018, holding key positions in both.

One year after his passing, Shafin Ahmed’s legacy continues to resonate. His pioneering spirit and contributions have left an indelible mark on Bangladesh’s music industry, inspiring countless artists and fans alike.
