Shakib Al Hasan eyes New Zealand series for Bangladesh comeback
Shakib Al Hasan is not in the country and has been away from the national team for quite some time. Yet, Bangladesh cricket's poster boy remains at the centre of discussions as always. Speculation has intensified once again about his return to the Tigers' red and green jersey.
There was speculation that Shakib could be brought back for the home series against Pakistan, but that is not happening. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has already announced the squad for the Pakistan series without including Shakib.
Primarily, Shakib has not returned to Bangladesh due to a lack of progress regarding the cases filed against him following the July uprising. Consequently, he will not be playing in this series, extending the wait for his fans.
However, even if he misses the Pakistan series, Shakib is hoping to return for the New Zealand series next month. Shakib himself has informed a local media outlet of this. He has also stated that he is continuing rigorous training to maintain his fitness.
Discussions surrounding Shakib's return in the Bangladesh jersey are now at their peak. From the sports minister to senior BCB officials, and even fellow cricketers, are talking about bringing Shakib back. Just a couple of days ago, national team ODI captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz mentioned that having a cricketer like Shakib in the team makes the captain's job easier.
It is noteworthy that Shakib Al Hasan last played for the national team in 2024. Afterwards, he expressed his desire to retire after playing on home soil, but he has been kept out of the team due to the political situation.
