Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan is set to return to competitive cricket after a lengthy absence, having signed for Jaffna Kings in the upcoming edition of the Lanka Premier League.

Experienced pace bowler Taskin Ahmed will also represent the franchise, with both players joining the team through direct signings ahead of the tournament.

The development was confirmed by tournament organisers through social media announcements, marking Shakib’s much-anticipated return to the field after months away from recognised T20 cricket.

In a post unveiling Shakib, the league described him as “one of the greatest all-rounders in T20 cricket,” highlighting his experience and composure in pressure situations as major assets for Jaffna Kings.

The league also praised Taskin’s inclusion, saying the franchise had added “fiery pace power” to strengthen its bowling attack. Taskin previously featured for Colombo Strikers in the 2024 season.

Shakib is no stranger to the tournament, having represented Galle Titans in the 2023 edition, where he scored 138 runs and claimed 11 wickets in 10 matches.

Jaffna Kings remain the most successful franchise in LPL history, winning four titles in five editions. Alongside the two Bangladeshi stars, the team has also secured direct signings of Sri Lankan players Bhanuka Rajapaksa and Dunith Wellalage.

The Lanka Premier League is returning after a two-year hiatus, with the 2026 season scheduled to run from July 17 to August 8. Jaffna Kings will open their campaign against Galle Marvels in Colombo.

Shakib last played a recognised T20 match in January, when he represented MI Emirates in the International League T20.
