Former Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan has said he will become active in politics once the activities of the Bangladesh Awami League resume.

In an interview with The Daily Star, Shakib said he is currently prioritising his cricket career, noting that time in professional sports is limited compared to politics.

“There is time for politics throughout life, but cricket has a short window,” he said.

Shakib, who was elected as a Member of Parliament from an Awami League ticket in the 2024 national election, has remained abroad since the fall of the government. He said he hopes to return to Bangladesh soon but legal complexities have delayed his plans.

Describing the allegations against him as baseless, he stressed the need for a swift and fair resolution, warning that prolonged legal uncertainty affects both personal and professional life.

On his current priorities, Shakib said he is focusing on extending his cricket career while spending time with family overseas. He also indicated that he would consider re-engaging in politics once party activities normalise, viewing it as a platform to serve the people.

Commenting on domestic cricket, Shakib expressed concern over disruptions in the structure and lack of coordination between clubs and the board, saying players are the worst affected.

He also voiced disappointment over Bangladesh’s recent struggles in major international tournaments, noting the long-term impact on players’ careers.
