Shamit Shome set for possible move to Pele’s former club New York Cosmos

Bangladesh midfielder Shamit Shome is reportedly on the verge of joining historic US club New York Cosmos after parting ways with Canadian Premier League side Cavalry FC, although neither the player nor the club has officially confirmed the move.

Shamit, who ended a three-year stint with Cavalry in January ahead of the 2026 season, has been without a club while searching for his next destination.

Reports circulating on social media now suggest that the 25-year-old midfielder has reached an agreement with Cosmos.

New York Cosmos currently compete in the third tier of the US professional football system, but the club carries a storied legacy. Brazilian icon Pele played for Cosmos from 1975 to 1977, while German World Cup-winning captain Franz Beckenbauer also represented the club during its celebrated North American Soccer League era.

A Canada-born footballer of Bangladeshi origin, Shamit Shome initially represented Canada, making two appearances in international friendlies. He later switched allegiance to Bangladesh and became an important part of the national team’s midfield.

He made his Bangladesh debut in June 2025 during the third round of AFC Asian Cup qualifying and scored his first international goal against Hong Kong in October 2025, despite Bangladesh losing the match 4-3.
