Shashi Tharoor backs Mustafizur as KKR face backlash over IPL signing
Bangladeshi pacer Mustafizur Rahman has received support from Indian Congress MP Shashi Tharoor amid controversy surrounding his signing by Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), as political tensions and criticism from hardline groups in India escalated.
KKR, owned by Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan, signed Mustafizur at the IPL auction for Rs 9.20 crore. The move triggered sharp reactions from several Hindu nationalist groups, with BJP leader Sangeet Singh Som branding Shah Rukh Khan a “traitor” over the decision.
Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Nirupam also demanded Mustafizur’s removal, citing allegations of oppression on Hindus in Bangladesh, and reportedly issued indirect threats. Some groups have been campaigning for the Bangladeshi bowler to be barred from the IPL.
Amid the backlash, Shashi Tharoor criticised the politicisation of cricket, saying sport should not be mixed with political issues. “There is no justification for linking cricket with allegations of minority persecution in Bangladesh. Mustafizur is a cricketer—he has not attacked anyone, spread hatred or supported violence,” Tharoor said.
He warned that pushing away neighbouring countries in this manner would ultimately harm Indian cricket and urged a more liberal approach.
Former India cricketer Mohammad Kaif also weighed in, saying the matter should be left to the cricket board. “This is a sensitive issue. The BCCI leadership is experienced and knows what needs to be done. The media should also show restraint,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) directed KKR to release Mustafizur from their squad. Speaking to news agency ANI, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia said the decision was taken due to “the unrest prevailing across the country,” adding that the franchise would be allowed to sign a replacement player.
On Saturday (January 3), KKR confirmed in an official statement that Mustafizur had been released in compliance with BCCI directives. The franchise said the decision was taken by following due process ahead of the next phase of the IPL and that, under league rules, KKR would be permitted to recruit a replacement.
