Six Iranian sailors have been released from US custody, while 22 others remain detained following the seizure of an Iranian container vessel in the Gulf of Oman, Iranian media reported on Thursday (April 30).

According to Iran’s semi-official Tasnim News Agency, the sailors were part of a 28-member Iranian crew aboard the vessel Tosca, which was intercepted and taken control of by the US Navy while en route toward Iran.

Tehran has condemned the incident as “an act of piracy” and demanded the immediate release of all crew members.

Iranian officials said diplomatic efforts were launched immediately after the incident, prioritising the safety of the sailors and a peaceful resolution. As a result of what Tehran described as “sustained diplomatic engagement,” six crew members have now been allowed to return home, while negotiations continue for the release of the remaining 22.

The seizure of the vessel has further heightened tensions in the strategic Gulf region, particularly near the Strait of Hormuz, a key global energy shipping route. Iranian authorities have accused the United States of escalating maritime tensions, while also warning against further “provocative actions” in the area.

Reports also suggested heightened military activity in the region following the incident, with claims of drone deployments and increased naval presence amid rising geopolitical friction.
