Six killed after under-construction bridge collapses in India
At least six workers were killed and three others injured after a section of an under-construction bridge collapsed during a storm in India’s Uttar Pradesh.
The incident took place around 3:00am (local time) in Hamirpur district on Friday (May 29).
The bridge was being built over the Betwa River to connect Markanda Parsani and Nethi villages in the Kurara area.
According to local authorities, strong winds and heavy rainfall triggered the collapse of a massive concrete slab, which fell onto workers who had taken shelter beneath the structure during the storm.
Police, district administration officials and members of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) rushed to the scene and launched a rescue operation shortly after the collapse.
Officials said three workers are still believed to be trapped on one of the bridge pillars, with rescue teams continuing efforts to reach them.
The injured workers were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment, while authorities have begun investigating the cause of the collapse.
