Six killed in landslide in Mumbai, India

At least six people have been killed in a landslide in Kurla area of Mumbai, India.

Officials fear that another four to five people may still be trapped under the debris.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Fire Services said the incident occurred at Gausia Chawl in the Ghatkopar area at around 3:48am on Wednesday.

According to preliminary reports, a section of a hill suddenly collapsed, sending debris onto two to three nearby houses. Several residents were trapped inside the buildings.

After receiving the report, multiple rescue teams rushed to the scene and began search and rescue operations. Specialised ‘victim-detection cameras’ are being used to locate people who may still be alive beneath the debris.

Following the landslide, BMC Mayor Ritu Tawde and Additional Municipal Commissioner for the Eastern Suburbs Avinash Dhakne visited the site.

The mayor announced financial assistance of Rs 300,000 for each bereaved family through the District Collector’s Office.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Ganesh Shinde told reporters, “Emergency rescue teams and local authorities are working continuously. We believe three to four people may still be trapped under the debris. However, it is not possible to confirm the exact number at this moment.”

He further said the bodies of those killed had been recovered and sent to a hospital for post-mortem examinations.

Ghatkopar police have taken necessary legal action and a detailed investigation into the incident is underway.
