Six killed, including children, as building collapses in Mumbai amid heavy rain
At least six people, including five children, have died after a building collapsed in Mumbai, India, following continuous heavy rainfall. Train and flight services have been disrupted, and all schools and colleges in the city have been closed for a day.
Authorities said two to three multi-storey houses collapsed in a slum in the Mankhurd area of Mumbai on Sunday, July 5, local time. Five children and one woman were killed under the rubble.
Heavy rain also triggered landslides at various points on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, forcing the highway to be temporarily closed and severely disrupting traffic between the two cities.
Local television footage showed large concrete debris scattered on the road and rainwater seeping through the roof of a tunnel.
The adverse weather has also affected air and rail services. Several flights have been delayed, and many long-distance trains between Mumbai and Pune have been cancelled.
Since the heavy rains began late last month, uprooted trees have become a common sight on Mumbai's roads. Local media reports said at least three people have died in such incidents.
Footage from local media showed residents wading through waist-deep water on roads and alleyways. In response to the situation, all schools and colleges in Mumbai have been closed for Monday.
The Indian Meteorological Department recorded more than 100 millimetres of rainfall in Mumbai, with some areas receiving up to 161 millimetres.
The department also said light to very light rain is likely in Delhi and many parts of the National Capital Region (NCR) on Monday.
