Six-goal thriller ends in joy for Algeria and Austria, tears for Iran

Algeria and Austria secured their places in the FIFA World Cup knockout stage after playing out a dramatic 3-3 draw, while Iran suffered heartbreaking elimination as a late equalizer shattered their qualification hopes.

The Group J finale at Kansas Stadium delivered one of the tournament's most dramatic finishes, with the knockout picture changing repeatedly until the final whistle.

Austria made the brighter start and took the lead in the 28th minute with a well-worked attacking move. Algeria, however, responded just before halftime as Rafik Belgali found the net in the 44th minute, sending the teams into the break level at 1-1.

Austria regained the advantage early in the second half, but Algeria refused to back down. In the 74th minute, Houssem Aouar produced a superb cross from the left for Riyad Mahrez, who calmly finished to make it 2-2. The strike marked Mahrez's 39th international goal for Algeria.

The drama intensified deep into stoppage time when Algeria scored again to move 3-2 ahead. At that moment, Austria appeared destined for elimination, while Iran's hopes of progressing as one of the best third-placed teams were suddenly revived.

But the script took another dramatic twist moments later. Austria struck with virtually the last kick of the game to level the score at 3-3, securing a crucial point that sent both sides through to the Round of 32 while crushing Iran's World Cup dream.

The match was evenly contested throughout. Austria enjoyed slightly more possession and dictated large spells of play, while Algeria looked more dangerous on the counterattack through the impressive trio of Mahrez, Aouar and Belgali. Austria, meanwhile, showcased remarkable resilience by fighting back each time they faced adversity.

The result sees Algeria and Austria finish the group on four points each, with both advancing to the knockout stage. Iran, meanwhile, dropped to ninth in the ranking of the best third-placed teams, ending their World Cup campaign in agonizing fashion.
