Snap has announced new features for its 'Specs' augmented reality glasses, integrating artificial intelligence, entertainment, workplace tools and augmented reality into a single experience. The features were showcased at an event in Los Angeles, where the company also introduced 'Specs Intelligence', an AI system designed to surface information based on a user's daily tasks and needs.

According to Snap co-founder and CEO Evan Spiegel, the Specs are built as a wearable computer rather than a conventional device. The glasses use transparent lenses to overlay digital information and experiences onto the real environment, without requiring a separate pocket computer or cable connection. Users can control various functions through hand gestures and voice commands.

The most notable addition is 'Specs Intelligence', which Snap describes as an 'anticipatory AI'. It is designed to build an understanding of a user's goals, priorities, relationships and daily routines from the apps and tools they choose to connect. Rather than waiting for a command, the system aims to surface relevant information or suggestions at the right moment. It can be used across iPhone, Mac and the Specs glasses.

For entertainment, the Specs will support content from YouTube and HBO Max, with Snap working to make the viewing experience comparable to a large screen. Through a Spotify connection, users can play music and podcasts based on voice commands or context. The company has also partnered with the NBA and WNBA to create an AR experience for basketball training, offering visual guidance and progress data.

Snap has also introduced 'Specs for Enterprise' to expand workplace use. Partnerships have been announced with companies including Amazon Web Services, Nvidia, Salesforce, Trifork and Hololights. The initiative is intended to allow workers in factories, shops or field roles to access information, instructions and remote assistance without keeping their hands busy. Work is also underway on device management and security controls for IT departments.

To keep the glasses operational outside Wi-Fi, Snap is launching a 'Specs Charging Case with Cellular'. Sold separately, the case provides up to four additional charges along with cellular connectivity. In the United States, the connectivity is being offered through a partnership with Verizon. Data plans start at $10 per month for Verizon customers and $20 per month for others. The bundle with the connected case is priced at $2,395.

According to Snap, the base price of the Specs is $2,195. A 'Specs First Look' demonstration will be held at Westfield Century City in Los Angeles starting October 1, allowing customers to try the device. Shipping is expected to begin in the United States, United Kingdom and France in late autumn.
