A snowslide has killed 11 members of a climbing team in Russia's remote Caucasus mountains, with six others still missing, according to an AFP report from Moscow on Monday.

The avalanche struck at around 5pm local time on Sunday on Mount Mijirgi, one of the highest peaks in the North Caucasus, trapping a group of 33 climbers .

More than 50 emergency rescue workers have been deployed for search and rescue operations. However, the difficult terrain and the risk of further avalanches are hampering the rescue efforts .

By 9am on Monday, the day after the avalanche, 10 climbers were able to safely descend the mountain on their own.
