Solidify the path to national unity

Since the popular uprising, the call for national unity has been heard; however, a clear path for such unity seemed elusive. Finally, a positive sign of unity emerged between the interim government and political parties. This unity was primarily formed in response to the anti-Bangladesh propaganda from India. Political parties have declared their commitment to stand united in the face of questions regarding the country's independence, sovereignty, existence, and dignity, and to support the interim government.

On Wednesday, December 4, the top leaders of the country's political parties expressed this commitment during a joint dialogue with Dr Muhammad Yunus, the chief advisor of the interim government. We welcome the political parties' pledge. We also want the path of unity to be firm, smooth, and the bonds of this unity to remain intact. However, as the saying goes, "a burnt cow fears even the sight of a cloud." In the past, we have witnessed many such bonds of unity, many promises. Before elections, many political parties come together in a coalition and express such pledges and hopes; but after the elections, things often return to the old ways.

The old cycle of violence, bloodshed, fights, clashes, and protests keeps recurring. Additionally, we have seen that two political parties, which once held hands and took the same oath, turn into enemies as soon as their interests are no longer aligned. When that happens, they not only point fingers at the opposing party but also don't hesitate to hit each other. We are afraid of this pattern because our past experiences have not been good, and it cannot be said that our political culture is in a healthy state.

Nevertheless, holding on to the past is not wise. Looking forward is the true sign of survival. We live with the hope that there is light at the end of the tunnel. For the sake of the country's interests and the protection of its sovereignty, there is no alternative to unity. However, this commitment to unity should not be limited to only countering Indian propaganda. There is also endless misunderstanding and misinformation within our own ranks. It is because of our own weaknesses that other countries take advantage. If we can truly stay united, no one will be able to take the opportunity to spread propaganda against us.

Our journey is long and arduous. We still have many paths to cross. The country is facing a severe ordeal. Since the popular uprising, many have repeatedly said that if we fail now, we may not know when we will rise again. We are also victims of a perilous geopolitics. To survive in the future world, we must be united; but will this unity come only through promises? To build a united society, we also need proper democratic practices. We need mutual respect and tolerance for others' opinions.

Our divisions are primarily ideological, and therefore quite deep. As a result, even a minor ideological disagreement can set off a fire. We must extinguish this fire with the inspiration of patriotism. Patriotism does not arise just by discussing it. It requires a deep connection with the soil and the people, and a heartfelt love for the country's culture. Let us overcome all ideological conflicts, awaken patriotism within us, strengthen the path of unity, and ensure that the bonds of unity remain unbroken — this is what we desire.
