Indian environmentalist and innovator Sonam Wangchuk was admitted to hospital early Saturday after his health deteriorated on the 21st day of his indefinite hunger strike at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi.

Delhi Police said Wangchuk was shifted to Safdarjung Hospital in compliance with a Delhi High Court directive and on the advice of doctors after his condition worsened.

According to Indian media reports, the 59-year-old activist remains conscious and his vital signs are currently stable. However, doctors had earlier warned that continuing the fast could lead to multiple organ failure. Medical bulletins also said he has lost more than eight kilograms during the protest.

Wangchuk has been on hunger strike demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, alleging moral responsibility over the alleged NEET examination paper leak. He has also called for reforms in India's education system.

The Delhi High Court recently directed authorities to ensure Wangchuk's daily medical examination, stressing that "every citizen's life is valuable" and instructing the government to take all necessary steps to protect his life.

Meanwhile, Delhi Police urged protesters at Jantar Mantar to vacate the protest site peacefully, saying minor tension arose when some demonstrators attempted to obstruct the court-ordered action.
