South Africa scripted a landmark moment in their football history on Wednesday(June 24), defeating South Korea 1-0 to secure a place in the FIFA World Cup knockout stage for the first time ever.

In a high-stakes Group A encounter at Monterrey Stadium, the African side produced a disciplined and resilient display to claim all three points and seal qualification to the Round of 32. The victory lifted Bafana Bafana to four points from three matches, enough to finish second behind group winners Mexico.

South Africa will now face co-hosts Canada in Los Angeles on June 28, chasing an even greater World Cup breakthrough.

For South Korea, the defeat was a bitter blow. The Taeguk Warriors entered the match knowing a draw would be enough to guarantee progression, but the loss left them third in the standings on three points. Their hopes now rest on finishing among the tournament’s eight best third-placed teams, with qualification dependent on results elsewhere.

South Korea started brightly and nearly took the lead inside two minutes when captain Kim Min-jae’s header from a corner was cleared off the line by the South African defence. PSG midfielder Lee Kang-in also went close in the opening stages, narrowly missing the target.

As the first half progressed, South Africa grew into the contest. Goalkeeper Kim Seung-gyu was called into action twice in quick succession, first denying Mofokeng’s effort before producing another save to keep out Makgopa’s rebound. Despite chances at both ends, the teams went into the break level at 0-0.

Seeking a breakthrough, South Korea introduced captain Son Heung-min early in the second half. The Tottenham forward helped increase the pressure, but South African goalkeeper Ronwen Williams remained outstanding, making a crucial save from Oh Hyeon-gyu’s header in the 60th minute.

The decisive moment arrived three minutes later. A swift South African counterattack exposed the Korean backline, and after defenders failed to clear Moremi’s delivery, the ball fell kindly to Tafelo Maseko, who calmly finished past the goalkeeper to score the most important goal in South Africa’s World Cup history.

South Korea threw everything forward in search of an equaliser, dominating possession and territory for the remainder of the match. Their best opportunity came deep into stoppage time when Jinseob narrowly failed to connect with a dangerous cross, allowing South Africa to hold on for a famous victory.

The final whistle sparked emotional celebrations among South African players and supporters as the nation secured its maiden appearance in the World Cup knockout rounds.

South Korea’s fate now depends on the rankings of third-placed teams across the tournament, while the Czech Republic exited the competition after finishing bottom of the group with one point.
