South Africa stun South Korea to secure historic knockout berth

South Africa scripted a landmark moment in their football history on Wednesday(June 24), defeating South Korea 1-0 to secure a place in the FIFA World Cup knockout stage for the first time ever.

In a high-stakes Group A encounter at Monterrey Stadium, the African side produced a disciplined and resilient display to claim all three points and seal qualification to the Round of 32. The victory lifted Bafana Bafana to four points from three matches, enough to finish second behind group winners Mexico.

South Africa will now face co-hosts Canada in Los Angeles on June 28, chasing an even greater World Cup breakthrough.

For South Korea, the defeat was a bitter blow. Their best opportunity came deep into stoppage time when Jinseob narrowly failed to connect with a dangerous cross, allowing South Africa to hold on for a famous victory.

South Korea’s fate now depends on the rankings of third-placed teams across the tournament, while the Czech Republic exited the competition after finishing bottom of the group with one point.
