South Korea shocks Czech Republic with stunning comeback
In an exhilarating start to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, South Korea broke their streak of three consecutive opening-match losses by defeating the Czech Republic 2-1 at the Guadalajara Stadium in Mexico.
This resurgence marks a pivotal moment for the Asian powerhouse, as they clinched all three points with a remarkable comeback.
From the outset, South Korea displayed an aggressive style of play, pushing the Czech defense to its limits with the pace of stars like Son Heung-min and Lee Kang-in. Despite dominating possession at 53 percent in the first half and creating several chances, including a long-range effort from Lee Jae-sung, the half ended without goals.
The second half commenced with heightened intensity, but South Korea found themselves trailing in the 59th minute when Czech captain Ladislav Krejci scored with a header from a long throw-in by Vladimir Coufal, silencing the Korean fans.
Undeterred by the setback, South Korea equalised in the 67th minute, courtesy of midfielder Hwang In-beom, who skillfully evaded both the goalkeeper and a defender with a deft chip shot.
A strategic move by Korean coach introduced substitute Hwang Ui-jo in place of the fatigued Son Heung-min at the 70-minute mark, proving to be a game-changer. Hwang netted the match-winner in the 80th minute, converting a cut-back pass after receiving a precise through ball.
The Czech Republic had a potential equalizer in the 77th minute, but Tomas Soucek's goal was disallowed for offside. In a thrilling conclusion, South Korea held firm during a tense six minutes of stoppage time, denying the Czech Republic a golden opportunity in the 93rd minute and ultimately sealing a 2-1 victory.
