Spain, Argentina ‍set to clash again in Finalissima

Spain and Argentina, two powerhouses of world football, are poised to face off once again in the highly anticipated Finalissima, which could take place toward the end of this year, according to Martin Arevalo, a senior journalist at ESPN Argentina.

The Finalissima is an intercontinental showdown between the reigning European champions (UEFA Euro winners) and the South American champions (Copa America winners). In the previous edition held in 2022 at London's Wembley Stadium, Argentina lifted the trophy after defeating Italy with a decisive 3-0 victory.

According to the original plan, the marquee fixture between Spain and Argentina was scheduled to be hosted at Qatar's Lusail Stadium ahead of the 2026 World Cup. However, the match was postponed due to security concerns and political tensions in the Middle East. Alternative proposals later emerged to hold the clash at Madrid's Santiago Bernabéu Stadium or via a home-and-away format between the two nations, though no definitive agreement was reached at the time.

Martín Arévalo’s recent report claims that fresh progress has been made toward organizing the encounter at Qatar's Lusail Stadium in November 2026, adding that the Qatari government has already secured the hosting rights for the event. Although neither UEFA nor CONMEBOL has released an official statement regarding the matter, the report has generated immense excitement among football enthusiasts globally.

Due to the earlier postponement of the Finalissima, the two sides ultimately met in the 2026 World Cup final. In that match, Ferran Torres scored the lone goal in the 106th minute of extra time to secure a 1-0 victory over Argentina, handing Spain their second World Cup title. Shortly before the deciding goal, Argentina was reduced to ten men after Enzo Fernández received a red card.

Following that World Cup final defeat, the potential Finalissima match offers Argentina an immediate opportunity for revenge, while Spain will aim to reassert their dominance as world champions once more.
