Spain closes airspace to US aircraft involved in Iran strikes
Spain has closed its airspace to US military aircraft involved in operations related to the Iran war, the country's Defence Minister Margarita Robles confirmed on Monday, March 30.
Speaking to journalists in Madrid, she said Spain will not allow the use of its military bases or airspace for any activities linked to the Iran conflict.
Earlier, the country had denied the US permission to use its military bases; this new decision is seen as a further escalation.
Analysts believe this decision holds strategic significance as Spain is a NATO member. As a result, US military aircraft may need to use alternative routes. However, Spanish media reported that the ban will not apply in emergency situations.
When asked whether this decision could strain relations with the United States, Spanish Economy Minister Carlos Cuerpo said Spain does not support any war that unilaterally violates international law. This decision reflects that principle.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez had previously criticised the actions of the United States and Israel regarding the Iran war, describing the attacks as "reckless" and "illegal."
Meanwhile, reports indicate that US President Donald Trump has threatened to suspend trade with Madrid in response to Spain's stance.
