The refereeing controversy from Argentina's last-16 clash with Egypt at the FIFA World Cup refuses to die down, with fans, pundits, former players and match officials all weighing in on the contentious decisions. While some insist the officiating was flawless, others argue Egypt were on the wrong end of blatant injustice. Spain coach Luis de la Fuente has now added his voice to the debate with a firm and direct verdict.

Speaking on the controversy surrounding Argentina's last-16 win over Egypt, De la Fuente dismissed all criticism of the officiating, insisting the referee got every call right.

Argentina staged a stunning comeback from 2-0 down to beat Egypt 3-2 and reach the quarter-finals. The controversy stemmed from three key moments: a first-half penalty awarded against Egypt, a disallowed Egyptian goal moments after the second half began, and a potential foul on Mohamed Salah inside the box in the buildup to Argentina's stoppage-time winner.

Egypt coach Hossam Hassan was scathing in his post-match assessment, accusing officials of favoring Lionel Messi and the reigning world champions. But De la Fuente offered a starkly different take when asked about the episode in an interview with DAZN.

The Spain boss said he did not understand why he was being asked about the refereeing debate at all, questioning where the discussion had even originated. He said he had watched the match and felt every decision the referee made was correct, adding that he wanted to congratulate the official for what he called a flawless performance.

The win over Egypt sent Argentina through to the World Cup quarter-finals, where the reigning champions will face Switzerland at Kansas City Stadium. Should the three-time champions progress, they would meet the winner of the Norway-England tie in the semi-finals.

Argentina remain unbeaten through the tournament so far, scoring 14 goals while conceding five. However, their last two matches have both required hard-fought comebacks, exposing cracks in Lionel Scaloni's side that will need addressing if La Albiceleste are to defend their title.
