Spain took a 1-0 lead at half-time in the crucial match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 32 at the Sofitel Stadium in Los Angeles with a gift of daputa football. Despite dominating possession throughout the first half of the match, which started at 1 am Bangladesh time, Spain had to wait until the 36th minute to see a goal. Finally, with the help of Marc Cucurea, Mikel Oyarzabal shook the opponent's net and brought relief to the team.

In the 36th minute of the match, Spain's left-back Marc Cucurea entered the box from the left edge and extended the ball towards the midfield. Real Sociedad forward Mikel Oyarzabal ran in and got the ball and finished it coolly. This was his second goal in the current World Cup and his third contribution in the tournament, including goals and assists.

Spain had also had the scent of a goal before. In the 34th minute, Lamine Yamal found a perfect through ball, the young winger found the goalkeeper alone but sent the ball slightly high in an attempt to chip it. Shortly before, Kucurea headed the ball into the net from a corner, but the goal was disallowed after a foul on Pau Kubersi for blocking the Austrian goalkeeper.

Luis de la Fuente's men had complete control of the ball throughout the first half. Despite keeping the Austrian defense busy with continuous attacks, the team was unable to move forward in the first 35 minutes due to a lack of perfect finishing. In contrast, Ralf Rangnick's Austria kept their defense organized and waited for a counterattack. Austria's biggest chance of the match came in the 17th minute when Michael Gregorich headed wide from Marcel Sabitzer's extended cross.

Spain was one of the toughest defensive teams in the group stage. They kept a clean sheet in three matches, topping Group H and advancing to the knockout stages, beating Saudi Arabia 4-0 and Uruguay 1-0, before drawing 0-0 with Cape Verde. Austria, on the other hand, had a dramatic campaign; after beating Jordan, they lost to Argentina and drew 3-3 with Algeria in the final match, where Sasa Kalajic's 96th-minute goal saved the team. This is Austria's first World Cup knockout stage appearance since 1954.

The winner will face either Portugal or Croatia in the last 16 at Dallas Stadium on July 6. Spain will be looking to end their unbeaten run in the knockout stages since winning the 2010 World Cup. Austria, on the other hand, has a chance to come close to their best ever performance since reaching the semi-finals in 1954. The match is being refereed by Swedish referee Glenn Nyberg.
