Spanish Armada begins quest for World Cup glory today
There are certain teams in world football that evoke images of beauty, artistry and dominance the moment their name is spoken. Spain is among the brightest names on that list. The team that once mesmerised the world with the magic of 'tiki-taka' football is set to begin their World Cup campaign, dreaming of glory once again. The new Spanish Armada, accustomed to a style blending artistic football with lightning-fast attacks, will start their journey in the 2026 FIFA World Cup today. Their first opponents are African debutants Cape Verde.
The two teams will face off at Atlanta's Mercedes-Benz Stadium at 10:00 pm Bangladesh time on Monday, June 15. While Spain are far ahead in strength and capability, coach Luis de la Fuente is not taking any opponent lightly on the World Cup stage. He considers the match of great importance.
Spain's current squad is an exceptional blend of experience and youth. After the historic feat of winning Euro 2008, the 2010 World Cup, and Euro 2012, La Roja re-established their European supremacy by winning Euro 2024. They now aim to continue that momentum on the World Cup stage.
The team's biggest strength in midfield is Rodri, widely regarded as one of the best midfielders in the world. The Manchester City deep-lying playmaker not only controls the ball but also dictates the entire team's rhythm. Alongside him will be Barcelona's creative midfielder Pedri and young star Gavi. This trio—in attack formation, passing, and breaking opponent defences—is Spain's greatest asset.
In attack, the most talked-about name is undoubtedly Lamine Yamal. The winger who took world football by storm as a teenager has generated sky-high expectations among fans. His pace, dribbling, and goal-creating ability from the right flank can change the outcome of any match. On the left flank will be Nico Williams, who has become one of Europe's most dangerous wingers over the past two years. On April 22, he picked up an injury while playing for Barcelona, creating uncertainty about his World Cup participation. However, the young forward is now fully fit, dispelling all concerns.
Speaking at a press conference on Monday, Spain coach de la Fuente said, "The best news is that Lamine is now 100 per cent ready. He is in the exact condition we wanted to see him in. Nico Williams and Victor Munoz are also doing well. Everyone is ready to play." However, the coach indicated that Yamal may not play the full 90 minutes in the opening match; he will be used as needed.
Spain's potential attack also includes Mikel Oyarzabal, the hero of the Euro 2024 final. His goal-scoring ability and big-match temperament as a centre-forward give Spain added confidence. Experienced stars like Álvaro Morata and Dani Olmo are also available as options.
In defence, there are several reliable players. Marc Cucurella will play on the left flank, handling both attacking and defensive duties equally well. Centre-backs include Robin Le Normand, Pau Cubarsi, and Dani Vivian. In goal, Spain's trust lies in Athletic Bilbao's Unai Simón.
The match against Cape Verde is not just about securing three points for Spain; it is also an opportunity to send a message to the world about their ambitions for the entire tournament. This team, built on the combination of the new generation—Yamal, Gavi, Pedri—and experienced players like Rodri, Oyarzabal, and Cucurella, is being seen as one of the favourites for the title.
The dream that was fulfilled in South Africa in 2010, with the magical football of Xavi Hernández and the feet of Andrés Iniesta, has been rekindled in the United States by a new generation of the Spanish Armada. Now the question is: can the successors of tiki-taka bring Spain the golden crown of a second World Cup?
