Lionel Messi displayed a rarely seen fiery side during Argentina's FIFA World Cup quarter-final against Switzerland, confronting referee João Pinheiro before leading the defending champions into the semi-finals with a 3-1 extra-time victory.

The heated exchange came in the first half after the Portuguese referee awarded Switzerland a free-kick near Argentina's penalty area. While organising the defensive wall, Messi questioned the decision, but the referee's response appeared to frustrate the Argentine captain.

Pointing his finger at the official, Messi reportedly said: "Speak properly. Speak to me with respect. I spoke to you respectfully." The moment quickly went viral across social media.

Messi's frustration continued later in the half as he protested another decision, insisting teammate Leandro Paredes had not fouled Swiss midfielder Djibril Sow. The Argentine captain also endured a physical battle, suffering a cut near his eye after being struck by Swiss skipper Granit Xhaka in the 70th minute. After receiving treatment, he continued playing despite the bleeding.

Earlier, Messi had already made World Cup history. His corner in the 10th minute was headed home by Alexis Mac Allister, making the Argentine superstar the first player ever to register 10 assists in FIFA World Cup history—two more than Diego Maradona. Remarkably, all 10 assists have been converted by 10 different teammates.

Switzerland fought back through Dan Ndoye, who equalised in the 67th minute, but the match turned five minutes later when Breel Embolo received a second yellow card for simulation following a VAR review, reducing the Swiss to 10 men.

The European side resisted bravely until extra time before Julián Álvarez broke the deadlock with a stunning long-range strike in the 112th minute. Lautaro Martínez sealed the 3-1 victory on the counterattack moments before the final whistle, sending Argentina into another World Cup semi-final.
