'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' breaks records in first week of release
The Tom Holland-starrer 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' has made history at the box office. The film earned $927 million worldwide in its opening weekend, marking the second-highest opening weekend in cinema history . At the top of this list remains 'Avengers: Endgame', released in 2019, which earned $1.22 billion.
In Hollywood, the first three days of a film's release (usually Friday to Sunday) are considered its 'opening weekend'. This is seen as the most important metric for measuring a film's commercial success.
The film earned $355 million from 4,487 screens in North America, making it the second-highest ever in that market — just $2 million behind 'Endgame's $357.1 million record . Analysts said the gap could change when final figures are released. It earned a further $572 million from 66 international markets .
Of particular note for South Asian audiences, the film earned $31.8 million in India, setting a new all-time opening weekend record for a Hollywood film in that market . It also set new records in France, Brazil, Spain, Peru, Colombia, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Chile, Turkey, Ecuador and Belgium . In China, it earned $121 million in five days — notable because the previous installment, 'No Way Home', did not receive a release in that country .
This is the highest-grossing opening in Sony Pictures' history. The film is quickly heading towards the billion-dollar club . Despite recent audience fatigue with the superhero genre, this installment of Spider-Man has proven to be an exception.
With this new record, all of the top four opening weekends in cinema history are now held by Marvel films — 'Avengers: Endgame' ($1.22 billion), 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' ($927 million), 'Avengers: Infinity War' ($640.5 million), and 'Spider-Man: No Way Home' ($587.2 million).
