Bangladesh's hopes of carrying their momentum from Darwin into the second Test were rocked by a stunning opening spell from Mitchell Starc, who claimed five wickets in just 22 balls to trigger a dramatic top-order collapse at Mackay.

Bangladesh lost their first five wickets for just 12 runs, with Starc accounting for every one of them.

The left-arm quick began the destruction with the very first ball of the innings, dismissing opener Shadman Islam for a duck. He then removed Tanzid Hasan Tamim, captain Najmul Hossain Shanto, Mominul Haque and Litton Das to complete his five-wicket haul.

Starc conceded just four runs during the devastating spell. Of Bangladesh's five dismissed batters, only Mominul managed to get off the mark, with the other four departing for ducks.

His five wickets came from only 22 deliveries, making it the fourth-fastest five-wicket haul in Test history. Starc already holds the record for the fastest five-for, having taken five wickets in just 15 balls against the West Indies last year.

Ernest Toshack, Stuart Broad and Scott Boland share the next-fastest mark at 19 balls, while Shane Watson took five wickets in 21 balls.

The haul also saw Starc surpass South African great Dale Steyn's 439 Test wickets, moving him into fifth place among the highest wicket-taking fast bowlers in Test cricket. England legend James Anderson leads the list with 704 wickets.
