Starmer announces quitting MP post after Prime Minister

Keir Starmer has announced stepping down from the Member of Parliament (MP) post as well after leaving the British Prime Minister’s post. As a result of his resignation, a by-election will be held in the Holborn and St Pancras seat in London. The report is from BBC.

In a statement given to the Camden New Journal, Starmer said representing this seat for 11 years was a matter of ‘huge honour and pride’ for him. However, now he wants to focus his attention on ‘international affairs’.

Starmer stepped down from the British Prime Minister’s post at the beginning of the current summer. After that Andy Burnham succeeded him.

There had been speculation for several weeks over whether Starmer would remain as MP after leaving the Prime Minister’s post. Earlier in an interview given to BBC he had said he would serve as MP until the next general election. However, finally he stepped back from that decision.

The next general election in Britain is scheduled to be held in 2029. In the statement published, Starmer said now he is ready to ‘hand over the baton of responsibility to a successor’ on Tuesday (September 1).

He said now he wants to focus on other issues. Among these are various international issues including defence, security, trade and technology. He also mentioned that these issues carry special importance in a rapidly changing world.

Starmer also informed about continuing the work to prevent violence against women and girls. He said he has been working on this issue with others for a long time. He had started this work even before becoming an MP and wants to continue it even after leaving the MP post.
