Storm forces France-Iraq World Cup clash to extended delay

A thunderstorm over Philadelphia Stadium brought France's Group I clash against Iraq to an unscheduled halt, with the two-time World Cup winners leading 1–0 at the break through a Kylian Mbappé screamer — his third goal of the tournament.

Mbappé, making his 100th appearance for France, scored from long range to give Didier Deschamps's side a deserved lead, bending in a powerful curler from the edge of the penalty area after receiving a pass from Michael Olise on the right.

Iraq's defence backed off, a decision they paid for immediately, as Mbappé's left-footed effort carried enough curl and power to beat goalkeeper Ahmed Basil Fadhil.

France dominated the first half, outshot Iraq 7–2 attempts, and played almost exclusively in Iraq's final third. The Iraqis, however, showed resilience. Ousmane Dembélé and Bradley Barcola showed flashes, beating defenders with pace and skill to deliver dangerous balls into the box, though neither produced a shot on target. Iraq, for their part, occasionally worked their way out through France's press with patient build-up play.

Then the weather intervened. Rain intensified late in the first half, and with lightning detected in the vicinity, fans inside Philadelphia Stadium were warned to seek shelter from the approaching storm. An extra 15 minutes were added on top of the standard half-time break due to the conditions.

FIFA's protocol stipulates that if lightning is detected within an eight-mile radius of the stadium, play will be halted for a minimum of 30 minutes after the last strike before resumption can be considered.

The match remains in progress, with France leading 1–0. A final result will follow.
