Strait of Hormuz to be closed if US maintains sanctions on Gulf ports: Iran's Speaker
Iran has warned it could close the Strait of Hormuz if the United States does not lift sanctions on Iranian ports in the Gulf, Iran’s parliamentary speaker Bagher Ghalibaf said.
Bagher Ghalibaf made the remarks in a post on social media platform X on Friday (April 17), saying recent statements by US President Donald Trump were “entirely false.”
Ghalibaf claimed Trump had posted multiple messages within an hour, though he did not specify which statements he was referring to.
“The Strait of Hormuz will be open or closed based on field realities, not social media,” he said, adding that shipping through the strategic waterway would operate under “defined routes and with Iran’s permission.”
Earlier, Iran's foreign minister Abbas Araghchi said the Strait of Hormuz is "completely open" to commercial ships for the remainder of the ceasefire.
