Suriya's 'Viswanath & Sons' enters 100-crore club in just two days
South Indian superstar Suriya's new film 'Viswanath & Sons' has grossed over Rs 100 crore worldwide within just two days of its release. With this, the actor has crossed the century mark for the second consecutive film. Suriya has returned to box office success with a new release in less than three months.
The film, directed by Venky Atluri, was released in theatres on August 14, coinciding with India's Independence Day. It has generated massive interest among audiences since its release. The makers announced that the film's global collection crossed Rs 100 crore by the end of the second day. This is the fastest film in Suriya's career to reach the Rs 100 crore milestone.
Earlier, Suriya's 'Karuppu' was also a major box office success. That film earned around Rs 350 crore worldwide, making it the highest-grossing film of his career. With two consecutive big earners, Suriya has become one of the most talked-about stars in South Indian cinema today.
'Viswanath & Sons' revolves around industrialist and Olympic medalist Sanjay Viswanath. To fulfill his mother's wish, Sanjay becomes a father through surrogacy. However, when the child later falls seriously ill, he finds himself in a new situation and reaches out to the child's surrogate mother.
What begins as a transactional relationship gradually takes on a different dimension. Through the child, Sanjay grows close to the surrogate mother, Maddy, and their bond eventually turns into love. The film also highlights the age gap between the two, with Maddy being 20 years younger than Sanjay.
The film has sparked discussion among audiences and critics for its storytelling around surrogacy, age gaps, societal perceptions and various taboos. Alongside Suriya, the film features Mamita Baiju, Radhika Sarathkumar, Ravina Tandon, Sunil Reddy and Nassar. Made on a budget of approximately Rs 130 crore, the film's ultimate box office performance is now being closely watched by industry insiders.
