Suspected thieves wrapped in tape, delivered to police in Indonesia

Residents of a neighbourhood in Indonesia have detained several suspected thieves in a manner that has sparked widespread discussion on social media. Instead of using ropes or handcuffs, they wrapped the suspects from head to toe in thick orange packing tape before handing them over to police.

The incident occurred earlier in July 2026. According to local media, residents caught the suspects red-handed while attempting to break into a shop. To prevent them from escaping, they wrapped their entire bodies tightly with packing tape, leaving them unable to move. Police later arrived and took them into custody.

A video of the incident, which went viral on social media, shows the tape-wrapped individuals resembling large parcels. Netizens responded with a mix of humour and criticism. Some commented, "They look like parcels ready for courier delivery!" while others joked, "They'll need scissors to get out of that wrap!"

However, the incident also triggered serious debate, with many questioning whether it was acceptable to publicly humiliate suspects or take the law into one's own hands. Human rights and rule-of-law advocates argued that even if someone is suspected of a crime, they must be treated within the bounds of the law.

Analysts said the responsibility for trial and punishment rests with law enforcement agencies and the courts, not ordinary citizens.
