Suvendu Adhikari is set to be sworn in as the new chief minister of West Bengal today (May 9), marking a major political transition in the eastern Indian state following the recent assembly election.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) formally announced Suvendu Adhikari as its legislative leader on Friday, paving the way for his oath-taking ceremony scheduled for Saturday in Kolkata.

The high-profile ceremony is expected to be attended by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and several senior BJP leaders. Chief ministers from at least 20 Indian states are also expected to join the event, according to Indian media reports.

Authorities have enforced tight security measures surrounding the ceremony venue at Brigade Parade Ground. Nearly 4,000 police personnel have been deployed, while the area has been divided into 35 security sectors to manage the large gathering.

Preparations are also underway at the state assembly and administrative headquarters, where offices previously used by former chief minister Mamata Banerjee and her cabinet members are being reorganised for the incoming administration.

Indian media reported that Adhikari will officially assume office at the state secretariat from Monday, while traffic restrictions and heightened security arrangements remain in force across Kolkata ahead of the swearing-in ceremony.
