Switzerland captain Xhaka dropped from squad over fake Covid certificate

Switzerland captain Granit Xhaka has stepped aside from the national team after admitting to obtaining a fake Covid-19 vaccination certificate. As a result, the Sunderland midfielder will not be able to play in the upcoming Nations League. He decided not to join the team camp after discussions with the Swiss Football Association on the matter.

In a statement on social media, Xhaka expressed regret over the past incident. He said that in 2022, amid uncertainty, fear and distrust regarding the Covid vaccine, he obtained the certificate without following the proper process. The Swiss captain admitted his decision was wrong and also promised full cooperation with the relevant authorities.

Swiss Football Association President Peter Knäbel welcomed Xhaka's decision. In his view, both sides agreed to continue the camp in Xhaka's absence during this international break in the interest of the team. Switzerland wants to focus on the team's preparations for now.

The Lucerne prosecutor's office is currently investigating the incident from 2022, when Xhaka was playing for Arsenal. It is examining whether a criminal offence occurred in obtaining the fake Covid certificate. Xhaka may be questioned as part of the investigation. However, no verdict has yet been reached finding him guilty of any offence.

Xhaka, who has played 152 matches for Switzerland, will not be joining the team in Belek, Turkey this time. He will also be absent from the away matches against North Macedonia and Scotland in the Nations League, as well as the home matches against Slovenia and North Macedonia.

The Swiss Football Association will reassess Xhaka's situation after the international break. Only then will the next step regarding his future in the national team be determined.
