Switzerland booked their place in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 with a commanding 2-0 victory over Algeria at BC Place on Friday (July 3-BST). First-half strike from Breel Embolo and an early second-half goal by Dan Ndoye sealed a comfortable win for Murat Yakin's side, extending their unbeaten run in the tournament.

The Swiss made a perfect start, taking the lead in the 10th minute through Embolo. The forward calmly slotted home after a defence-splitting through ball from Johan Manzambi on a swift counterattack, leaving the Algerian backline exposed.

Switzerland struck another decisive blow immediately after the restart. Just 46 seconds into the second half, Ndoye doubled the advantage with a clinical finish, effectively putting the contest beyond Algeria before they had a chance to regroup.

Despite enjoying 55 percent possession compared to Switzerland's 45, Algeria failed to convert their territorial dominance into meaningful opportunities. They managed eight shots throughout the match, but only two tested Swiss goalkeeper Gregor Kobel, who delivered another composed performance between the posts.

Algeria coach Vladimir Petković made all five substitutions in an attempt to inspire a comeback, introducing fresh attacking options including Anis Hadj Moussa and Amine Gouiri, while captain Riyad Mahrez was withdrawn in the 71st minute. Switzerland boss Murat Yakin also rotated his attack late in the game, replacing goalscorer Embolo with Zeki Amdouni.

Algeria's only booking came in the 36th minute when Farès Chaïbi was shown a yellow card. Their best second-half opportunity also went begging after Adil Boulbina was flagged offside before he could capitalize on a loose ball.

The victory sends Switzerland into the World Cup Round of 16 for the fifth time in the last six editions of the tournament. It also marks the Swiss nation's first-ever knockout-stage victory over an African opponent at the World Cup.

For Algeria, the defeat ends another promising campaign in disappointment, with their wait for a maiden FIFA World Cup knockout victory continuing despite an impressive display in possession.

Switzerland will now await the winner of the Round of 32 clash between Ghana and Colombia to determine their opponents in the Round of 16.
