Switzerland lead Algeria 1-0 at Round of 32 clash in Vancouver
Switzerland have taken an early lead against Algeria in their FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32 fixture at BC Place, going ahead in the 10th minute despite seeing much less of the ball in the opening exchanges.
Breel Embolo put Murat Yakin's side ahead against the run of play, converting Switzerland's only shot on target so far to put Algeria on the back foot. Algeria have dominated possession, holding the ball for 70 percent of the opening period, but have struggled to translate that control into clear chances, managing just one attempt that went off target.
Switzerland fielded a starting line-up with a couple of changes from pre-match predictions, with Denis Zakaria and Dan Ndoye named in the XI in place of Djibril Sow and Christian Manzambi. Algeria's manager Vladimir Petkovic also made adjustments to his projected side, starting Houssem Aouar and Ramiz Zerrouki in midfield ahead of Hicham Boudaoui.
The match remains in progress, with the winner set to advance to a Round of 16 meeting against either Ghana or Colombia.
