T20 World Cup: India seal semi-final spot with win over West Indies

West Indies failed to get past India in the virtual quarter-final. The hosts became the last team to secure a semi-final ticket in the T20 World Cup, defeating the Caribbean side by five wickets in the final Super Eight match. With this loss to India, West Indies' World Cup journey comes to an end.

Chasing a target of 196 runs, India reached the victory shore with 19.2 overs.

Earlier, opener Abhishek Sharma returned to the pavilion early. Ishan Kishan also departed before the end of the Powerplay. Both scored 10 runs each before being dismissed.

Openers Sanju Samson and skipper Suryakumar Yadav absorbed the early pressure in the third wicket stand while maintaining the required run rate. The pair built a 58-run partnership. The stand was broken when Suryakumar Yadav was caught by Sherfane Rutherford off Shamar Joseph's delivery. The Indian captain scored 18 runs off 16 balls. Tilak Varma scored 27 runs off 15 balls in the following wicket. Hardik Pandya departed for 17 runs off 14 balls.

Meanwhile, opener Sanju Samson continued his measured innings. He remained unbeaten until the end, guiding the team to victory. He remained not out on 97 runs. His remarkable innings came off just 50 balls, decorated with 12 fours and four sixes. Shivam Dube remained unbeaten on eight runs.

Earlier, at the start of the match held at Eden Gardens, Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav won the toss and invited West Indies to bat. The Caribbeans got off to a good start. The opening partnership yielded 68 runs. Opener and skipper Shai Hope was dismissed for 32 runs off 33 balls. The other opener, Roston Chase, scored 40 runs off 25 balls.

In-form batter Shimron Hetmyer and Sherfane Rutherford could not settle at the crease for long. Hetmyer scored 27 runs off 12 balls. Rutherford made 14 runs off nine balls.

Rovman Powell and Jason Holder launched a late assault with the bat. The pair built a 60-run partnership, helping West Indies post a substantial total. Rovman Powell remained unbeaten on 34 runs off 19 balls, while Jason Holder remained not out on 37 runs off 22 balls.

Jasprit Bumrah was India's most successful bowler. The right-arm pacer took three wickets, conceding 36 runs in his four overs. Hardik Pandya and Varun Chakravarthy took one wicket each.
