Taijul wants to be Test captain
Soon after the Test series against Sri Lanka came to an end, Najmul Hossain Shanto unexpectedly announced his resignation from the captaincy. Since then, questions have been raised about who will lead the Tigers in red-ball cricket. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has yet to name a new captain. Meanwhile, experienced left-arm spinner Taijul Islam has expressed his interest in taking on the role.
In an interview with the sports website Cricbuzz, Taijul Islam stated, "A captain’s decision should be respected. When the team has confidence in its leader, the performance naturally improves. If I’m given the chance to lead, why would I refuse? I have the experience and all the qualities needed for the role."
At the same time, he made it clear that he isn’t actively chasing the position, adding, "I’m not saying I want to be captain, but if the responsibility comes my way, I’m fully prepared to take it on."
The veteran cricketer also shared his views on leadership, stating, “Test captaincy isn’t about glamour. A captain needs to have a clear vision—what kind of team he wants to build and where he sees the team in two years. That goal is what truly matters.”
However, Taijul has left the final decision in the hands of the team management and board officials. The ball is now in the board’s court to decide whether to prioritize experience or place their trust in young leadership.
