Extortion from car dealers
Take swift action against the extortionists
We have previously heard of various forms of extortion in the transport sector, but we have never heard such a strange thing before—that extortionists call from abroad, give information about where a family member is, and threaten to harm them in order to collect money from car dealers. Many of these criminals are calling from outside the country to demand extortion money. From Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, Malaysia and Singapore, they are threatening car dealers. So far, six businessmen have filed general diaries with Vatara Police Station in the capital regarding these incidents. Most of those targeted have showrooms on Progoti Sarani, Baridhara and surrounding areas in the capital.
According to a report published in the media on Wednesday (22 October), at least 40 car dealers in the capital have faced extortion attempts in the past six months. The extortionists even also threatened to kidnap the family members of the businessmen if the money is not paid. Under such circumstances, last Sunday, reconditioned car dealers took to the streets to protest and demanded action against these incidents. The car dealers and members of law enforcement agencies say that alongside known professional extortionists and muggers, new faces are also emerging.
Meanwhile, reconditioned car dealers are now the ones most threatened by extortionists. Most recently, on 15 October, a cocktail explosion took place in front of Beg Auto in Baridhara apparently to press the demand for money. So far, similar attacks have taken place on 12 car showrooms. However, police have not yet been able to arrest a single person involved. According to business sources, the car dealers who have so far been threatened and whose showrooms have been targeted by cocktail explosions include Car Selection, Beg Auto, Turbo Auto, Hello Cars, Bismillah Cars, Ocean Motors, LNB Car, Bishwas Importers and Wali Car. Several police officials involved in the investigation say that all the numbers used to issue the threats are foreign. Alongside local police, the DMP Cyber Crime Unit has also begun investigating. In addition, the number plates of the motorbikes used in the attacks have been found to be fake.
The level of fear caused by this situation is clear. Today, car dealers are being threatened and extorted; tomorrow, criminals might target other business owners. If the law enforcement agencies do not resolve the matter immediately, such incidents will only increase. This will bring about stagnation in business and trade. Such crimes are not only a threat to individual safety but also to the entire economy. When businessmen do not feel secure, investment declines, employment opportunities decrease, and tax revenue is affected. Consequently, economic growth suffers a negative impact.
To maintain economic stability, ensuring the security of businessmen is now essential. Bangladesh is already passing through various difficulties. If such disturbances continue, they will not only harm the economy but also cause serious psychological distress among the public. The government must take swift and effective action. Otherwise, this wave of extortion will disrupt public life and create chaos.
