Tanzid’s historic century draws praise from Ponting, Gilchrist and Mark Waugh

Bangladesh opener Tanzid Hasan Tamim has earned high praise from three Australian greats after producing a memorable century in only his second Test on Australian soil.

Tanzid struck 101 off 197 balls, including eight fours and a six, in the Darwin Test to become the first Bangladeshi batter to score a Test century against Australia in Australia.

Speaking on Channel Seven, former Australia captain Ricky Ponting hailed the achievement as an exceptional feat, particularly so early in Tanzid’s Test career. Ponting praised the left-hander’s patience, solid defence and uncomplicated technique, noting how effectively he adapted from Bangladesh’s typically slower pitches to the conditions in Australia.

Former Australia opener Mark Waugh also praised the innings on Fox Sports, describing it as a milestone Tanzid would remember for the rest of his career. He said scoring a century against a world-class Australian bowling attack made the achievement particularly special.

After the second session, Australian wicketkeeping great Adam Gilchrist interviewed Tanzid and praised his composure at the crease. Tanzid said the century was especially meaningful because it came on his first tour of Australia and in only his second Test.

The young opener, however, played down the personal milestone, saying his priority had been to bat according to the team’s needs and focus on responding naturally to each delivery.

Tanzid’s century has added another landmark to an impressive Bangladesh batting performance in Darwin, with the opener’s temperament and technique earning recognition from some of Australia’s most celebrated cricketers.
