Tarique Choyon resigns as press secy at Bangladesh’s Kolkata mission

Md Tariqul Islam Bhuiyan, better known as Tarique Choyon, has resigned from his post as first secretary (press) at the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission in Kolkata, citing personal and professional reasons.

Choyon confirmed his resignation to Views Bangladesh on Wednesday.

He told Views Bangladesh: ‘I resigned from the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission in Kolkata due to personal and professional reasons.'

Tarique Choyon said he spent a wonderful year and a half in the city of Kolkata and tried to fulfil his assigned responsibilities properly.

‘I intend to write a book in the future about my professional life, office, colleagues and friends in Kolkata. Everyone, please pray for me. May Allah help us all,’ he said.

He also announced his departure in a post on social media, writing that he had spent "a wonderful one and a half years" in Kolkata and had tried to carry out his responsibilities to the best of his ability.

He was appointed First Secretary (Press) at the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission in Kolkata in November 2024 by the then interim government on a one-year contract. His tenure was later extended by another year in recognition of his contribution to promoting Bangladesh's positive image in India and building professional relationships with members of the Kolkata media.

Before joining the diplomatic mission, he was active in journalism and had previously served as a central leader of the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal. He worked for several Bangladeshi media outlets, including Banglavision, Manab Zamin, Janakantha and Kaler Kantho.

A former student of the University of Dhaka, he has also written extensively on diplomacy, politics and international affairs for newspapers at home and abroad. He is the author of the book Obisongbadito Tarique Rahman (The Undisputed Tarique Rahman).

For his professional, social and cultural contributions, Choyon has received several honours, including the International Excellence Award in Malaysia and the Moitree Sammanona and Sera Bangali Sammanona awards in West Bengal.

Meanwhile, after remaining vacant for nearly two years, the government appointed Md Khaled, an official of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as the full-time Deputy High Commissioner in Kolkata in July.
