Tears in Vini’s eyes despite striking four goals
Vinicius Junior has undeniably become the epicenter of Brazil's hopes and dreams. The star forward is in peak form at the North American World Cup, having found the back of the net in all three group-stage matches. As the Seleção prepare to face Japan in the Round of 32, all eyes are once again on him.
However, ahead of this crucial knockout clash, the superstar was moved to tears. During a recent interview, Vini broke down in emotion when the conversation turned to his grandmother.
Appearing on the popular Brazilian television show “Domingão com Huck,” the Real Madrid forward wept after watching a video message sent by his grandmother. "She is a very special person in my life," Vinicius said afterward. "My father was always away working, so my mother, my siblings, and I grew up with my grandmother. Our house was small, so for a long time, I slept right next to her. I am at a loss for words now. She completely changed my life. I know everyone has to leave one day, so I want to cherish every single moment with her. They did everything possible to help me fulfill my dreams. Nothing is more valuable than seeing her happy."
Carrying Brazil's sixth star ambition
Vinicius has emerged as the linchpin of the Brazilian attack in this tournament, scoring four goals across the three group-stage matches. Fans are heavily banking on him for the upcoming fixtures, knowing his brilliance is indispensable if Brazil is to secure their long-awaited sixth World Cup title.
During the interview, Vinicius addressed the pressure that comes with the hunt for the elusive "Hexa." He admitted that the prolonged wait for the title has intensified the scrutiny. "This is a generation fighting to their absolute limit to bring Brazil back to the top," he stated. "Securing that sixth star is taking time, but we have learned a lot over the last few years. Many in the current squad played in the last Copa América. Coach [Carlo] Ancelotti has given us freedom, peace of mind, and the hope of reclaiming the throne. Having experienced players like Neymar, Casemiro, Alex Sandro, Danilo, and Marquinhos helps youngsters like us play with confidence. I am only 25, and with talents like Endrick and Rayan coming up, we have a truly great squad."
The battle beyond the pitch
Apart from his footballing exploits, the forward spoke passionately about his stance against racism, emphasizing that his off-field impact means more to him than silverware.
"These achievements off the pitch are far more important to me than success on it, because they allow me to stand up for so many people," Vinicius explained. "Even if change is slow, I want it to continue so that the next generation doesn't have to suffer through this. I have a seven-year-old brother, and I don't want him to experience racism. Alongside achieving big things on the pitch, I want to inspire young Black people who don't have a voice as loud as mine."
Peak physical and mental form
Reflecting on his current spectacular run, Vinicius expressed immense confidence in his preparation.
"I said before the tournament started that I am in the best shape of my career—technically, physically, and mentally," he said. "I worked tirelessly throughout the season to ensure I was 100% ready. I stayed injury-free and didn't miss a single match for Real Madrid. The harder you work, the luckier you get."
Closing the interview with a smile, Vini shared a lighthearted moment: "I don't usually score headers. I actually had a bet with the coach today about it. I’ve only scored two or three headers in my entire career. Now, I have to go pick out my reward for winning that bet."
