A fire broke out in the cold storage or freezing unit of BD Food Limited located in Sagarika area around 11am on Sunday (March 29). Seeing smoke and flames coming out within a moment, the employees quickly left the factory. People from the surrounding area also rushed to the spot.
According to fire service sources, after receiving the information, 8 units started working to control the fire one by one at 11:40am. Although it took some time due to the limited space of the cold storage and the equipment inside, the fire was brought under control within an hour and a half.
Locals said that thick smoke spread in all directions during the fire. As a result, panic spread among the shops and residents in the area and many people left the area.
Fire Service Officer Jasim Uddin said that there was a risk of the fire spreading quickly due to flammable materials in the cold storage. However, a major accident was averted as many units arrived on time. The situation is now normal and the area is safe.
Factory authorities said that the specific cause of the fire has not yet been determined. Initially, it is believed that the fire may have started due to a fault in the electrical connection or equipment. An investigation has been launched to find out the actual cause of the incident and the extent of the damage.
The Fire Service said that a major loss of life was averted due to the rapid action taken by a total of 8 units and 12 fire trucks.
