Thailand and Cambodia have agreed to an immediate and unconditional ceasefire, which will come into effect from midnight on Monday local time, according to Malaysia’s Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

He described this as an important first step toward reducing the ongoing tensions and restoring peace and security. Both Cambodia’s Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thailand’s acting Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwan have firmly committed to upholding the ceasefire.

Top military officials from both countries will hold an informal meeting at 7 a.m. on Tuesday. After this meeting, a defense attachés meeting led by the ASEAN chair will take place on August 4.

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet said, “I am confident this dialogue will help rebuild mutual trust and confidence so that millions of people in both countries can return to normal life.”

Thailand’s acting Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwan said his country has participated in the talks “in good faith” and is committed to peace.

Both leaders thanked US President Donald Trump and the Chinese government for their roles as mediators in their brief statements. It is reported that nearly 300,000 people have been displaced due to recent clashes between the two countries.

On Sunday, Donald Trump posted on the social media platform Truth Social, saying, “There will be no trade deal until the fighting stops.” He also said, “I have spoken with the prime ministers of both countries and made it clear — if the fighting continues, there will be no trade deal with the United States.”
