Thailand’s Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has dissolved parliament just three months into his tenure, announcing a general election within 45 to 60 days via a royal decree on Friday (December 12).

The move comes amid political instability, criticism over the government’s handling of recent floods that killed at least 176 people, and clashes along the Cambodia border that left at least 20 dead and displaced hundreds of thousands.

Anutin’s minority government faced internal tensions after the progressive People’s Party withdrew support and planned a no-confidence motion, prompting the prime minister to dissolve parliament to restore stability and accountability.

Thailand has now seen two prime ministerial changes in the past year due to ethics violations and political crises, highlighting ongoing turbulence ahead of the upcoming election.
