Thailand holds general election today

Thailand began voting in a general election today, with no party expected to win a clear majority, setting the stage for likely coalition talks amid security concerns and political instability.

The election sees the reformist People's Party — leading in polls — face off against the conservative bloc of incumbent Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul. The vote takes place under the shadow of last year’s deadly border clashes with Cambodia and an economy still recovering from the pandemic.

Thailand's turbulent politics, marked by court-ordered dissolutions of parties and prime ministers, loom over the process. The previous election’s winning party, Move Forward, was blocked from taking power and later dissolved.

"We need a strong leader who can protect our sovereignty," said Yuernyong Loonboot, 64, voting in Buriram, Anutin's hometown. "The border conflict has made me anxious."

No single party is forecast to secure a parliamentary majority. Prime Minister Anutin’s Bhumjaithai party, currently second in surveys, could again seek a coalition with the third-placed Pheu Thai party, linked to imprisoned ex-premier Thaksin Shinawatra.

Voters will also answer a non-binding referendum on whether to amend the military-drafted constitution, though no specific changes are proposed.
