Popular South Indian actor-turned-politician Thalapathy Vijay is set to take oath today (May 10), as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.

The swearing-in ceremony will be held at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Chennai at 10:00am (local time).

Vijay’s rise to power is being seen as the end of the decades-long two-party dominance of the DMK and AIADMK in Tamil Nadu politics.

According to Indian media reports, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi is expected to attend the ceremony. His presence, alongside Congress’ support for the newly formed alliance government, is being viewed as a significant political endorsement for Vijay’s administration.

Tamil Nadu Governor R. N. Ravi formally invited Vijay to form the government on Saturday night. Along with the new chief minister, nine cabinet ministers are also scheduled to take oath today.

In the recently concluded Assembly election, Vijay’s party Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) emerged as the single largest party with 108 seats. He later secured a majority with the backing of the Indian National Congress, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi, Communist Party of India, Communist Party of India (Marxist) and Indian Union Muslim League.

Chennai has turned into a sea of yellow and maroon ahead of the ceremony, as thousands of supporters and fans gathered to witness the moment. The silver-screen “Thalapathy” is now stepping into the state secretariat as a real-life mass leader, in what supporters are calling a historic political transformation.
