The ‘3-3-3 Dating Rule’: A new way to test relationship compatibility before marriage

Deciding whether a romantic relationship is ready to move toward marriage can be difficult. Early attraction and emotions can sometimes mask differences that become apparent only with time. A social media trend known as the ‘3-3-3 dating rule’ offers a simple framework for evaluating a relationship at three stages: after three dates, three weeks and three months.

The first checkpoint comes after three dates. One or two meetings may not be enough to understand someone’s personality, as people can be nervous or focused on making a good impression. By the third date, recurring patterns in behaviour, communication and comfort levels may become easier to identify. Even if the experience is positive, however, the stage is considered too early for a marriage decision.

The second checkpoint is three weeks into the relationship. By then, couples may have seen more of each other’s everyday lives, including how they manage work, family, friends and personal commitments. It can also be a useful time to discuss major issues such as career plans, finances, children and lifestyle expectations. Differences should be addressed openly rather than ignored.

The final checkpoint comes at three months. By this stage, the initial excitement may have settled enough for couples to assess the relationship more realistically. How a partner handles stress, disagreements and emotional needs can become clearer, while differences in values, communication styles and long-term goals may also emerge.

Relationship experts caution against treating the 3-3-3 approach as a rigid formula. Turning a relationship into a series of tests can create unnecessary pressure and undermine natural communication. Instead, the framework is better viewed as a reminder to pause periodically and ask whether the relationship is developing in a healthy and compatible direction.

Three months is neither a deadline for marriage nor a reason to automatically end a relationship. If doubts emerge, couples can use them as an opportunity to understand the underlying issues and have honest conversations.

Ultimately, for a decision as significant as marriage, trust, communication, shared values and compatible expectations about the future matter far more than any dating rule or timeline.
